Scapular Dyskinesia collective term refers to ‘’moment
of scapula that is dysfunctional and may create a possible impairment of overall
shoulder function’’. It can be seen in overhead athletes, patients with
shoulder pathologies such as rotator cuff disease, glenohumeral instability,
impingement syndrome, and labral tears, as well as in healthy individuals.
The condition involves changes in scapular biomechanics,
including movements such as upward/downward rotation, internal/external
rotation, and anterior/posterior tilt.
Scapular dyskinesia can lead to symptoms like pain around
the scapula when using the arm overhead, snapping or popping sensations with
shoulder movement, loss of strength, asymmetrical posture, winging of the
scapula, and shoulder instability.
Common Signs and Symptoms
- Pain
and tenderness around the scapula
- Snapping
or popping sensation around the scapula
- Loss
of strength with shoulder and arm use
- Asymmetrical
posture
- Winging
of the scapula
- Shoulder instability
Causes
- Muscle
weakness or imbalance
- Poor
overhead mechanics
- Overuse
or repetitive motions such as throwing or serving
Risk Increases with
- Sports
involving overhead activity
- Increase
in throwing velocity
- Loose
joints
- Previous
or repeat shoulder injuries
Possible Complications
- Prolonged
healing time if not appropriately treated
- Chronic
inflammation or impingement of rotator cuff muscles
- Shoulder
stiffness or loss of motion
- Rotator
cuff tendon tears
Initial treatment includes medication for pain relief, ice
application for inflammation reduction, stretching and strengthening exercises
of scapular stabilizers like serratus anterior, lower traps and modification of
activities causing issues.
