Runner’s knee is a very common condition in individuals who run, exercise regularly, play sports or even walk a lot. This causes pain around the front of the knee and behind the kneecap. The pain is felt while running, climbing stairs, squatting or sitting for a long time with bent knees. This pain can also be associated with a clicking or grinding in the knee. The causes of this conditions can be overuse, muscle weakness, muscles tightness, poor running technique or improper alignment of the leg and foot. The another reason could be the weak hip and thigh muscles that can increase stress on the kneecap and lead to pain during activity. Physiotherapy plays an important role in management of runner’s knee because it helps in reducing pain and correcting the root cause of the problem. After a thorough assessment by a physiotherapist the treatment could include exercises to strengthen the quadriceps, hip muscles, glutes and core muscles so that the knee gets better support during movement. Stretching for tight muscles like hamstrings, calves and quadriceps to improve flexibility and reduce pressure on the knee joint. Also taping, manual therapy, ice therapy and soft tissue release can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. In most of the cases, running style, posture and walking pattern are also assessed because small corrections in movement can help reduce repeated stress on the knee. Proper warm up, good footwear, regular strengthening exercises and correct training progression are important to prevent the condition from coming back. With proper physiotherapy treatment and guidance, most people recover well and can return to running and sports activities without pain.
