Definition)
A supraspinatus tear is a partial or complete rip in the supraspinatus muscle/tendon, which is part of the rotator cuff in the shoulder. This tendon helps lift your arm and stabilize the shoulder joint. Tears can happen from injury (like a fall) or wear-and-tear over time (degeneration).
Symptoms:
- Pain (especially when lifting the arm or at night)
- Weakness in the shoulder
- Difficulty reaching overhead or behind the back
- Sometimes a 'catching' or popping sensation
Physical Therapy (PT) Management:
1. Pain Relief:
- Ice/heat therapy
- Gentle massage & ultrasound (if needed)
- Avoiding painful movements initially
2. Restore Movement:
- Gentle range-of-motion exercises (pendulum swings, passive stretches)
- Later, active movements (shoulder rolls, wand-assisted exercises)
3. Strengthening:
- Start with light resistance bands
- Focus on rotator cuff & scapular muscles (e.g., external rotations, scapular squeezes)
- Progress to weights as pain allows
4. Functional Training:
- Practice daily tasks (reaching, lifting)
- Improve posture & shoulder mechanics
5. Preventing Re-injury:
- Avoid heavy overhead activities initially
- Learn proper shoulder techniques for work/sports
