Frozen shoulder also called Adhesive Capsulitis is a condition where your shoulder becomes painful and very stiff. It usually happens slowly over time. At first you may feel mild pain but gradually it becomes difficult to move your shoulder especially while lifting your arm reaching behind your back or even doing simple daily activities like combing hair or wearing clothes. The joint becomes tight because the soft tissues around the shoulder get inflamed and thick which reduces movement. This condition generally goes through three stages. In the first stage called the freezing stage pain increases and movement starts decreasing. In the second stage the frozen stage pain may reduce a little but stiffness becomes very high and shoulder movement is very limited. In the last stage the thawing stage the shoulder slowly starts getting better and movement gradually returns. Frozen shoulder is common in people between 40–60 years of age and is more seen in people with conditions like Diabetes. It can also happen after injury, surgery, or if the shoulder is not used for a long time. At physionautics clinic, the main goal is to reduce pain and improve movement. Treatment includes gentle stretching exercises shoulder mobilization heat therapy and ultrasound therapy. We focus on step-by-step recovery by reducing pain then improving range of motion and finally strengthening the shoulder so the patient can return to normal daily activities easily.
