What is Developmental Delay?
Some children take longer to achieve developmental milestones such as sitting, standing, walking, balancing, coordinating movements, or participating confidently in play.
With appropriate physiotherapy, targeted stimulation, repetition, and meaningful opportunities to move, children can work towards improving their strength, mobility, coordination, balance, and functional independence.
What is Aqua Therapy?
Aqua therapy, or aquatic physiotherapy, is a structured form of physiotherapy performed in water under the guidance of a trained physiotherapist.
Water creates a unique therapeutic environment. Buoyancy supports the body and reduces the effects of gravity, while water resistance challenges muscles and movement. This allows children to practice movements that may be difficult on land in a supportive and controlled setting.
How Can It Help?
* Strength & endurance: Water resistance helps strengthen the arms, legs, and core.
* Balance & postural control: Movement through water encourages continuous adjustments, improving body control and stability.
* Gross motor development: Children can practise functional skills such as standing, walking, stepping, squatting, reaching, and jumping with appropriate support.
* Coordination & motor planning: Play-based activities encourage children to coordinate movements and develop better awareness of how their body moves.
* Sensory & body awareness: The pressure and resistance of water provide rich sensory and proprioceptive input.
* Confidence & participation: A supportive environment can help children experience successful movement, encouraging them to explore and participate more actively.
Why Does It Matter?
For a child, progress is not always a big milestone.
It may be standing a little longer, taking one more step, reaching independently, or simply finding the confidence to try.
Every movement is practice. Every attempt is learning. Every small achievement is progress.
Aqua therapy can be integrated into an individualized pediatric physiotherapy program according to the childβs abilities, developmental level, functional goals, and specific needs.
Let them move. Let them explore. Let them discover what they can do.
