Physiotherapy Management For Ankylosing Spondylitis@Maharani Bagh

Ankylosing spondylitis is a long‑term inflammatory form of arthritis that mainly targets the spine and sacroiliac joints, causing persistent back pain, stiffness, and gradually reduced mobility.Over time, the inflammation can lead to new bone formation and fusion of vertebrae, which may fix the spine in a rigid, stooped posture and significantly affect daily activities and in normal day to day life we call it a bamboo spine. This inflammation can extend to hips, shoulders, ribs, and sometimes the eyes or other organs, so a person might notice deep buttock pain, chest tightness on breathing, or episodes of red, painful eyes along with back symptoms. The condition is chronic and usually starts in young adulthood, often with dull morning stiffness that eases a bit with movement rather than rest. • Goals of physiotherapy Physiotherapy does not cure ankylosing spondylitis, but it plays a central role in keeping the spine mobile, reducing pain, and preserving posture and lung function. The main goals are to maintain range of motion, prevent or limit deformity, support day‑to‑day function, and help the person stay active and independent for as long as possible. • Core treatment techniques A typical physiotherapy program focuses on several pillars such as spinal mobility and stretching exercises are used to reduce stiffness in the neck, thoracic spine, and lower back. Strengthening work targets the back muscles, abdominal muscles, hips, and shoulder girdle to support an upright posture and reduce strain on painful joints.Postural training includes teaching neutral spine alignment in sitting, standing, and lying. • Breathing and functional training Because the ribs and thoracic spine can also stiffen, physiotherapists often prescribe deep breathing and chest expansion exercises to keep the rib cage as mobile as possible. • Education and long‑term self‑care Education is one of the most human parts of management, as the physiotherapist helps the person understand the condition and build a realistic, sustainable exercise routine.
