Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an
acute, rapidly progressive autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the
peripheral nerves. This leads to
weakness, numbness, and paralysis, often starting in the legs and moving upward (ascending paralysis). The symptoms
worsen over hours to days, typically reaching peak within 2–4 weeks. Begins in legs → spreads to arms → can affect respiratory muscles. The symptoms include tingling , numbness and reduced sensation. Most people recover completely from GBS , but some serios cases can be fatal. While recovery takes up to several weeks to a few years , most people are able to walk again after 6 months.
There are different phases of GBS and physiotherapy intervention changes according to different phases. The different phases are : Acute phase , plateau phase and recovery phase.
In acute phase where the muscle weakness is progressing and control is decreasing , physiotherapy goal are to prevent complications, protect muscles, maintain joint mobility. Not causing to the patient to get fatigued is a very big factor.
Similarly , in the second phase (plateau phase) where there is no more rapid progression of the disease , the goals change to : maintain ROM, improve tolerance, starting gentle activation.
In the last phase (recovery phase) , the goals are to rebuild strength, endurance, and function as the muscle strength is slowly being regained.
