Best Physiotherapy Management for Iliotibial Band ...

Best Physiotherapy Management for Iliotibial Band Syndrome/IT Band Syndrome.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common causes of lateral knee pain, especially among runners, cyclists, and other endurance athletes. It occurs when the iliotibial band (a thick band of connective tissue running from the hip to the shin) becomes tight or inflamed and rubs against the lateral femoral condyle (outer part of the knee).

Causes of IT Band Syndrome are:- 1. Repetitive flexion and extension of the knee (common in runners/cyclists) 2. Poor biomechanics (e.g., overpronation of the foot, leg length discrepancy) 3. Weak hip abductor and gluteal muscles 4. Poor flexibility of the IT band or surrounding muscles 5. Inadequate warm-up or training errors (sudden increase in mileage)

Symptoms of IT Band Syndrome are:- 1. Sharp or burning pain on the outer side of the knee 2. Pain worsens with activity, especially cycling and running 3. Swelling or snapping sensation on the outside of the knee 4. Tenderness on palpation over the lateral femoral condyle

Physiotherapy Management of IT Band Syndrome 1. Pain & Inflammation Management- advice rest and try avoiding aggravating movements, apply cold packs and some electrical modalities is used. 2. Stretching Exercises- IT Band Stretch, Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL) Stretch, Gluteal and Hamstring Stretching, Stretching reduces tightness in the IT band and surrounding muscles. 3. Strengthening Exercises 4. Myofascial Release 5. Gait & Biomechanical Correction 6. Return to Activity.
