Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch on the inside of
the feet flattens, causing the entire sole to touch the floor, resulting in
mobility, issues, pain, fatigue, body alignment issues, etc. Some of the common
causes are hereditary, weakness of muscles, weak arches, injury, tear, wear and
tear. Most children are born with flat feet, which typically resolves and
develop arches by the age of six. It often occurs in adults due to weakness of
posterior tibial tendon, (which supports the arch), arthritis, injury or
pregnancy can also cause the arches to collapse. Symptoms include pain in the
arch, heel or ankle, foot fatigue or aching after prolonged standing or walking,
leg and back pain, outward tilting of the heel or foot.
Treatment usually involves custom made arch support or shoe
insert, supportive footwear, medication for pain, physical therapy, and
surgery, in cases of severe structural deformity.
Physical therapy involves strengthening of the muscle
supporting the arch and resolving the pain. Different exercises are designed
according to patient’s need and the level of deformity. Manual therapy and mobilisation

suggested as well as weight management to reduce the pressure on the feet and
