Elbow Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis, Students elbow, Popeyes Elbow)
Elbow bursitis is a condition in which the olecranon bursa, a small fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow, becomes inflamed. This bursa normally helps reduce friction and cushions the elbow during movement. When it gets irritated, it can cause swelling, pain, and difficulty using the arm comfortably.
Causes-Elbow bursitis can happen due to several reasons. A common cause is direct injury, such as falling on the elbow or hitting it against a hard surface. It can also develop from repeated pressure or stress on the elbow. This is often seen in people who rest their elbows on desks or hard surfaces for long hours, especially during typing or desk work.
Certain sports activities can also increase the risk of elbow bursitis. Sports like football, hockey, basketball, and volleyball, golf , pickleball involve frequent elbow movements or falls, which can irritate the bursa. Repeated bending of the elbow or leaning on it for support may also lead to this condition.
Symptoms-The most common symptom is swelling at the back of the elbow, which may appear slowly over time. The area may look red and feel warm. Some people experience stiffness, a dull aching pain, or tenderness when touching the elbow. Pain may increase when moving the elbow or putting pressure on it. In some cases, elbow movement may become limited.
Physiotherapy plays an important role in recovery. Treatment focuses on reducing pain and swelling and helping the elbow move normally again. It includes education about the condition, advice on avoiding pressure, gentle hands-on techniques like soft tissue mobilisation , dry needling , joint mobilisation and the use of ice or heat as needed. Stretching and strengthening exercises are added gradually to improve flexibility and strength. Posture correction and shoulder stability exercises may also be included.
Advice-Avoid resting your elbow on hard surfaces for long periods. Use elbow padding if needed and follow a guided rehabilitation program for the best recovery.
