Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a common condition that causes pain on the outer side of the knee. It usually happens when the iliotibial (IT) band a thick band of connective tissue that runs from the hip to the outside of the knee becomes tight or irritated. ITBS is common in runners cyclists athletes and people who do repetitive bending and straightening of the knee. The pain often starts gradually and becomes worse during activities such as running climbing stairs walking long distances or cycling. Some people may also feel a clicking or rubbing sensation on the outside of the knee. Tight hip muscles weak gluteal muscles poor running technique incorrect footwear or overtraining can increase the risk of developing this condition. If left untreated the pain may become severe enough to affect daily activities.
